I honestly believe our government, nutrition foundation and the ministry of health want to help. But I have to question some of their nutrition advice updated as recently as 2020 and 2021.
If you don't believe me, all the references are at the end of the article for you to do a deep dive and take a read for yourselves.
I would love to know your thoughts if you have an opinion.
"Include carbohydrate-containing foods, such as bread, pasta, or rice, at every meal, to provide a constant source of energy."
Eat more of the same grain they used to fatten up cattle. Yep.
"Grain foods: At least 6 servings every day – choose mostly whole grain and those naturally high in fibre. Example: 2 breakfast biscuits"
Ooh. Not just that. Make sure you're doing it 6 times a day. And including biscuits.
"Grain Foods are high in carbohydrates... Adults need at least 6 serves each day"
Based on what evidence - I am so curious.
Why Does Our Health Advice Fatten Cattle?
To give you a very crude example of why I am questioning this information, here is some advice on how to make cattle, gain weight (and fast) ready for slaughter:
"According to the feeding expert, it is also necessary to feed with grain, because this is the only way to fatten cattle efficiently and economically."
Are we really giving a nation, where 1 in 3 people are overweight or obese, this advice?
Their Advice On Protein
"An 18yr old girl can meet her required 45g by eating grilled chicken breast, 2 slices of wholemeal bread and a pottle of yoghurt."
I've been this 18 year old girl. It wasn't nice. I was hungry and unhappy.
"A 50-year-old man can meet his required 64g by eating: baked beans on two slices of multigrain toast, and a grilled steak"
I eat twice the protein recommended for a 50 year old man. And I'm not sorry about it.
Their Advice On Dairy
"At least 2.5 servings every day - choose low-fat or reduced-fat milk and milk products"
Eat dairy with the natural fat stripped out, so that our blood sugar spikes and we want more of it.
Hmmm.
As someone who spent years avidly following these guidelines, existing on grains, cutting the fat off meat and drinking low fat dairy, I can say it didn't help me thrive.
I think a few of you have had similar experiences based on my three short years in business.
This post is purely informational - rather than opinion driven.
Do you eat 6 portions of grains a day? If so, how do you feel?
Do you little your protein intake and cut the fat off your meat?
What is your experience?
