The Secret To Getting Ahead Is Getting Started: Setting Meaningful 2024 Resolutions

Setting New Year's Resolutions for 2024 and Beyond: A Long-Term Approach

As we approach 2024, it's time to rethink how we set New Year's resolutions.

Before we get started.... here is a little inspiration from the experts!

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." – Mark Twain
"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible." – Tony Robbins
"A goal properly set is halfway reached." – Zig Ziglar
"It always seems impossible until it's done." – Nelson Mandela
"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." – C.S. Lewis

These quotes emphasise the importance of taking action, the power of setting clear goals, and the belief in the possibility of achieving them.

So...The Secret To Getting Ahead Is Getting Started: Setting Meaningful 2024 Resolutions. Now, lets get into how we make it happen.

Understanding Your 'Why'

Long-term change begins with understanding your deeper motivations. Move from surface-level desires like "I want to be thin" to more profound aspirations like "I want to maintain my health to enjoy life with my grandchildren." This shift in perspective is crucial for sustainable change.

Sadly superficial goal setting and trying to lose 5kg in 2 weeks, tends to result in 'falling off the wagon' just as quickly as you got on it. Real life is messy, it's sometimes challenging... it can get emotional. If you want a new lifestyle to stick, you have to have a solid reason why you're doing it.

This reason WILL change and morph as your life progresses. What started as an aestheic goal for me, quickly morphed and changed into feeling so good that I never wanted to go back. I found I was a kinder, more level headed person. Like a weight had been lifted. And I decided I wanted to stay that way for my friends, my family and any partners (in work or pleasure) that came into my life from that day onward.

Learning What Really Matters

Educating yourself about nutrition, physical activity, and mental wellness is key. My clients are always fascinated by the science behind the tips, habits and nutrition I recommend.

As James Clear states in "Atomic Habits," “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” It's about creating systems that align with what truly matters to you.

Don't sign up for an 8-week challenge if you've done them before and they haven't stuck. Try something different. Consider what sustainable exercise might look like to you.

Kind, Compassionate Goal Setting

Approach your resolutions with kindness and compassion. As Brianna Wiest suggests in her work, self-understanding and acceptance are vital. Recognise that progress is not linear and that being gentle with yourself on the journey is part of long-term success.

Life moves in waves. Gosh... being pregnant as I write this I can safely say I am close to 10kg heavier than I was this time last year. And that's perfectly OK.

What you need to get honest about is when feelings of weight gain, bad mood a lack of energy and a serious loss in confidence are beginning to become more painful than the alternative. Lifestyle change doesn't often come around until you decide that the NEW way is going to be far easier than staying in your current state.

Doing Your Best Every Day

Commit to making the best choices you can each day, understanding that every day won't be perfect. This is why we advocate for small, realistic goals that you can achieve quickly and relatively easily. Achieving small goals boosts your confidence and helps you approach your next step with confidence!

Remember, there are 21 meals in a week. If the 20 are bang on the 1 won't matter. It's what you do consistently that matters the most.

As you set your resolutions for 2024, focus on long-term lifestyle changes.

Understand your motivations, learn what matters, approach your goals with kindness, and commit to doing your best every day.

It's a journey of continuous learning and growth, leading to lasting transformation.
