Pork Crackling… it’s what middle-aged English men eat with their ale in pubs right?
Not a great option for a healthy, sustainable or nutritious diet… surely.
Think again.
Never tried it? Pork crackling is a snack made from pig skin.
When you cook it the skin puffs up and becomes crispy, making it crunchy (one of the many things we crave as part of delicious food).
Collagen: The Nutrition In Pork Crackling
Pork Crackling is high in collagen, which is a protein that is important for skin, hair, and joint health. Collagen is found in connective tissues, which includes the skin of animals. When the skin is cooked to make pork crackling, the collagen breaks down and becomes easier for our bodies to absorb.
Blood Sugar Balance
It is also made of purely protein and fat, with absolutely zero carbohydrates or sugar. This makes it incredibly satiating (filling). It won’t spike your blood sugar or cause it to crash shortly after eating. Meaning we are less likely to reach for more snacks or overeat at the next meal.
1 Ingredient = Simplicity
Most crunchy snacks that we crave (like chips) contain up to 20 ingredients. They are so processed it’s unreal.

When most people come to me for support - as well as existing on mainly carbohydrates, being moody, overweight & unhappy - most people are also consuming over 100 ingredients a day. We wonder why we walk around with endless hunger and desire, and tolerate gut issues as our body attempts to process this ultra processed, hyper palatable junk we call ‘food’. Do not underestimate the change sheer simplicity can have.
Sustainable Snacking
Pork Rhind is a by-product of the meat industry, meaning that it is made from a part of the animal that might otherwise be discarded. This makes it a sustainable snack option - it actually helps to reduce food waste. If you make it at home there is no packaging waste.
Is Pork Crackling Affordable?
A bag of Pork Crackling from the supermarket will set you back $5. They also tend to be incredibly high in salt. Refined and powdered 'collagen' that everyone is raving about will set you back even more.
It’s $6 for a large Pork Skin - enough for you to cook and separate into snacks for the whole week. Consider how much you usually spend on snacking during the week… could this save you some $$? One bag of chips is $3.60.
How To Make It At Home
Leave the pork skin to dry out for a few hours, and add salt to the rind if you want to.
We didn’t add any salt to ours (much to Scott’s disgust and it still tasted incredible).
Cut it into slices or cubes (it will shrink as it dries out)
Throw it in the air fryer (or oven on 200 Degrees fan forced/bake)
Leave to air dry for a little longer
Separate into portion sizes (if you like) to give you snacks for the week… it’s delicious and very easy to eat! Or throw it on the table for friends and family to share and enjoy.
