Hacking The Christmas Period

Hacking Christmas

It’s not an easy time of year if you’re trying to make improvements to your body, mind or health in general. Here are a few tips to sharpen your focus throughout the Christmas period that should ensure you come out the other side feeling happy, healthy and with clothes that still fit.

Eat Your Food In The Right Order

The order in which we eat has a massive impact on our blood sugar levels. Blood sugar spikes lead to spikes in insulin and ultimately cravings for more. Eat veggies before a meal. Yep, the French are on to something with crudites. Then focus on Protein. Protein has a much lower blood sugar response and regulates our hunger and satiety hormones. Then add any carbohydrates, sugar or desserts at the end of a meal.

Put Clothes On Your Carbs

I’ve said it before, but this is a really smart move. Carbohydrates (bread, pasta, cake, white or milk chocolate, lollies) are easy to overeat. We can consume more of these than any other food group. Ensure that every time you eat these foods you put clothes on them. What do I mean? Add a healthy portion of either protein or fat (or both) to lower the blood sugar response. Below - enjoy your Christmas dates stuffed with nuts and cheese. Or even wrap them in bacon.

Stand Up For Yourself

I can give you all the food tips you can imagine but the real issue around this season is how our geography and psychology changes. We are eating out more than ever, spending more time with friends and family, going out to events. This is a huge change from the norm for most people. We are more likely to throw caution to the wind in these situations. It also becomes culturally normal to say ‘screw it’ and go crazy. It’s way less socially acceptable to be healthy at this time of year. Remember, the only person that can help your cause this season is you.

Are you going to bear these in mind?

Last, but not least. It is Christmas. It is one day. Don’t beat yourself up about enjoying yourself. If you’re feeling worried/concerned/guilty/unhappy – ask yourself about the other 364 days in the year and what you can put in place to feel different next year.
